Guitar Workshop May 1, 2010

 

Join vituoso guitarists and teachers, Andrew Leonard and Doug Smith for a guitar workshop from 10- noon held at Kalispell Montessori School at 349 Willow Glen Drive in Kalispell.

 

Andrew, a guitar instructor at National Guitar Workshop and at the University of Kentucky (2004-2009) will present "How to lead a busy life and get better at guitar".  In his presentation you will learn how to: 1) Optimize your practice sessions no matter how much time you have;  2) Three simple tools to maximize your practicing: 3) Use the Practice Pyramid and Incremental Progress; and 4) Quickly isolate, diagnose and solve problem spots in your playing.  Andrew will help with how to organize your practicing, solve problems, and maximize your practice time and give some solutions to problems suggested by by the audience.

 

Doug. the 2006 Winfield International Fingerstyle Guitar Champion, and a Grammy Award Winner will present "Improvising for Guitarists".  Topics covered will include: 1) Scales, including the Pentatonic Minor Blues Scale; 2) Chord Arpeggios; 3) Combining Scale runs and Arpeggios; and 4) Melodic Phrasing.

 

The workshop is for teens and adults, advanced beginners through accomplished students.   Bring your guitar.  All examples will be presented in traditional music & TAB.  The fee is $35.  Enrollment is limited please call the NVMS office to register

 

Andrew and Doug will be perfroming at a private concert benefitting NVMS on Friday night, April 30 at Stillwater Landing for a suggested donation of $50 per person (call NVMS to register).  On Saturday, May 1 at 7:30, they will be performing at the Bigfork Theater.  They will be returning to the Valley this fall to teach at the Crown of the Continent Guitar Foundation's week long workshop.  

 

 

Piano Master Class August 3 & 5,  2010

Adults. Ken is back again! On Tuesday from 5 to 7pm and Thursday from 4 to 6pm, come spend two afternoons with performer and teacher Kenneth Christensen. Prepare a piece to performance level to play for Ken or simply come to listen. Ken will critique your performance and speak of performance skills and other issues pertinent to adult students. The afternoon will conclude with camaraderie and refreshments and plenty of time to get ready for the Festival Amadeus concerts.   The fee is $40.  Please call the NVMS office to register.

  

Violin Workshop Weekend April 9-10, 2010 TBA for 2011  

 

NVMS is excited to host both Terry Durbin and Heidi Martin for our Violin Workshop Weekend. Friday Masterclasses will be held at NVMS and the Saturday Workshop will be at Whitefish Foursquare Church.

Guest Clinicians

Terry Durbin is one of the most sought after clinicians/conductors in the counrty, bringing smiles and laughter to over 700 workshops and institutes throughout his career. He received his Undergraduate degree in Violin Performance from the University of Alabama, his Masters in Violin Performance from the University of Illinois, and recently completed his DMA in orchestral conducting from Claremont Graduate University in Los Angeles, California. Terry is a believer in the magic and power of music to enrich us and make our lives more meaningful and beautiful.

 

Heidi Martin is a Suzuki violin and viola teacher in Missoula, MT. She was the Suzuki Program Director at The University of Montana from 1996-2004, and has served as a clinician at the Montana Music Institute and Bismark State College's Summmer Institute. She received her Undergraduate and Masters degrees in Violin Performance and Suzuki Pedagogy from the University of Denver where she studied with James Maurer.
